Kathy Coates - Biography

I was born and raised in Charlotte North Carolina.

From my earliest memory I was  drawing and otherwise creating art, it has just always been a part of me .

I studied art in school and was selected to attend the North Carolina Governor’s School for the gifted and talented at Salem College in Winston- Salem North Carolina.

I graduated from college in commercial art and advertising design. After graduating I worked as an illustrator for 5 years.

I have illustrated 5 children’s books, three of which were with a national publisher.

In 1986 I began intensive study of fine art, developing all aspects of skills required to produce quality art, including drawing from the figure, study of artistic anatomy and comparative anatomy, color theory and composition.

I have studied with over a dozen artists of national and international stature.

I have always had a love of art and a desire to pursue art.  It is true that it takes more than a lifetime to perfect art, although the journey is filled with treasures along the way.

I hope that the prior years of intensive art study will be perceived in an intangible way for each person who experiences my work.

Commissioning a portrait:

A portrait is a piece of art that should bring you lasting joy and beauty.  It should reflect a sense of your loved one's personality and spirit.

At the start of our portrait project, I will meet with you to discuss our expectations for the work.  We will discuss background, mood, pose and clothing, as well as the size of the portrait.  While I prefer to take my own photographs references for the painting, I have agreed to paint from photographs other than my own in certain circumstances, however I can not guarantee a likeness in these situations.

I primarily paint formal portraits of people and animals in oil.  I also offer graphite drawings and watercolor portraits and more casual gesture portraits in watercolor or oil.  You can see examples of my portrait drawings on my  "Drawings" page.  To see examples of oil portraits and sculpture  go to my "Portraits" and Sculpture" pages.

Pricing for portraits start at $850 for a head and shoulders Graphite Conte' drawing, of human or animal.  Pricing for human head and shoulders oil portraits start at $2700.00.  Prices are based on the amount of figure depicted and if there is a solid or complex background.  For example, if you want a full figure ( showing the whole body of human or animal ) the price would increase.

For a bronze sculpture portrait, the price is calculated in part on the size as it relates to the square footage of bronze used, in addition to artist's fees.  For example, a child's bust measuring 18"x7"x5" approximately, would be in the  $3,000.00 to $4,000.00 range depending on size and amount of the figure.

A deposit of 40% is due at the beginning of the portrait and the balance is due at time of delivery of completed portrait.  Travel, shipping, and framing are not included.
