Sculpture of Hopper is finished.

The patina process is accomplished by applying heat to the freshly poured bronze.  Then a selection of chemicals are applied depending on the desired patina.  The amount of heat is decided on based on the chemical used and the desired patina.  Below are photos of the process starting with the newly poured bronze and ending with the finished patina.  For more information on patina contact www.carolinabronze.com

These are preliminary clay sketches or pinch models for my next sculpture project....my dog Hopper , a King Charles Spaniel. I do these first so  that I can plan the poses and compositions of the larger finished sculptures.

Hopper is one of  my favorite models.  I am always drawing and painting him, now I am sculpting him.

I will be posting more photographs of drawings, paintings, clay sketches and sculptures of him.

One of the things that I love to paint are colored transparent balls and glass, clear and colored.  I don't know exactly why...it is just something that speaks to me.  I have done quite a few in the past and plan to do more.  Many times these are small works done quickly.  Here is one of my most recent ones...more to come.

Another trip to the foundry

3/9/2014 12:06:32 PM | By Kathy Coates | Comment on this

My husband and I traveled to the foundry again.  It was a beautiful day to drive to Seagrove N.C.

I put the finishng touches on the horse and made some repairs on the bust.  The horse is made of a synthetic clay, which stays soft, and the bust is made of natural clay that has been fired.  I made the repairs on the bust with the synthetic clay, that is why the different colors.  I will travel to the foundry again for  the next stage which will be wax, then the bronze pour.

I will be photographing and maybe vedioing the process.

Here are front views of the sculptures.
